Spellbound

Tout est parti d'un croquis fait au hazard des coups de crayon il y a deux semaines ! J'ai aimé le visage qui en est ressorti et j'ai continué à le travailler en pensant à une magicienne qui pourrait venir d'un autre monde nous envouter avec sa magie .. l'idée d'un personnage plus atypique aux cheveux bleus m'a traversé l'idée, je lui ai rajouté quelques tatouages et "Spellbound" est progressivement né ! :) 

It all started with a sketch a couple of weeks ago, without any precise idea just for the pleasure of sketching. I loved the face that came out and I started adding elements to the initial sketch, thinking about a magician, an enchantress which could come from another world to enchant us with her magic. The idea of her having blue hair crossed my mind, I added a few tatoos on her face to make her look more mysterious and "Spellbound" was created ! :) 

Autumn treasures

Aux portes de l'hiver, voici quelques photos automnales et quelques fois insolites que j'ai prises au cours de mes balades ! En espérant qu'elles serviront de références à des futurs dessins !! :)

With winter coming along I wished to share with you some Autumn pictures I took a couples of weeks ago ! Hopefully they will serve as future reference for my paintings !! :)

First painting of the zodiac serie !

   Le Bélier -21 Mars au 20 Avril

Un signe de feu, masculin et gouverné par Mars. Il est le premier signe de la roue du zodiaque et débute à l'équinoxe de printemps. J'ai longtemps réfléchi à ce signe !! Il y a tellement de symboles et d'éléments que j'ai du choisir ceux qui me parlaient le plus.

Le signe du bélier c'est le commencement; la jeunesse, la fraicheur du printemps et l'impulsion du feu ! (J'ai préféré cette approche à celle du guerrier :) )

C'est mon premier personnage masculin et j'ai eu pas mal de difficultés à le dessiner ! Je le trouve un peu efféminé.. mais après de nombreux croquis c'est le mieux que j'ai pu faire pour l'instant ! :)

J'espère que vous aimez mon interprétation de ce signe et j'ai hâte de me mettre aux esquisses des prochains signes !!Si tout va bien le suivant est le Taureau !

  Aries - The Ram (21 March - 20 April) 

Aries is a fire and masculine sign ruled by Mars. It's the first zodiac sign and beginns at the Spring Equinoxe. It took me so much time to paint it ! The zodiac is so rich in symbols that I had to choose between all the elements the one that appealed the most to me. 

Aries represent for me the new beginnnings, youth, the brightness of Spring and the sparkle of a flamme.( I liked this aspect better than the war God and warrior aspect of Mars.)

It's my first male character and I found him a little too effeminate but I made various attempts and that's the best I can do for now ! :) 

I hope you liked my interpretation of this sign and I'm eager to start sketching the other signs !! The next one will be Taurus ! 

Autumn Greetings !!

A little card  to celebrate Autumn's magic !!

Jewel of the Sea finished painting !!

I'm so happy I managed to finish it !! :) 

I really wished to create a sea maiden, which will looks a little bit otherwordly with a greenish skin and hair the color of seaweeds. I wished her to be one of the jewels of the sea, one of the gardian of the undersea world  dressed in shells, coral and pearls. I'm quite happy with the results !

Jewel of the sea painting process-part 2

Second part of the painting process ! :) I begun to paint the coral above her and the seashells on her dress. I mixes various roses, purples and blue/greys, then I add some rubbing alcohol to create some sort of light texture. 

I also begun to add some details on the first seashells of her dress with white acrylic.

More seashells !! :) I took various books and pictures as references for she seashells as I really wish them to be the more realistic and detailed as possible. Here there are not completely done as I'm planning to add more texture on them with white acrylic. 

I use mixes of quinacridone gold, alizarin crimson, colbalt blue and cobalt violet to try to reproduce the shimmering colors of the seashells. For the sparkling aspect I add a light glaze of watercolor iridescent medium.

I'll add more depth on the maiden's skin and her as I really wish she looks a kind of fantastical and otherwordly and I'll also add more details on the seashells.

Jewel of the Sea walkthrough- painting process part 1

I wanted to play with complementary colors and I choosed various greens for the sea and a fiery mix of orange and red for the coral. 

Here's a first scan of the background in progress !

The color of the sea is a mix of various layers of Terry Harrison's "country olive" and "midnight green " (a deep olive green and deep forest green) and of Daniel Smith's "undersea green"( a more yellowish green). This green is simply wonderful ! It seems to be made out of seaweed !

I let each layer dry before adding a new color and I used sea salt and rubbing alcohol to create texture.

The coral has been created by mixing Windsor and  Newton's "Brown Madder" and Daniel Smith's "Quinacridone deep gold" and by adding sea salt and table salt when the paint was still wet. I'm so happy with the texture it created when drying !! :) 

The maiden's skin is a mix of both the sea and the coral colors to really create the impression that she is an underwater creature and that she is part of the sea. Her hair are a strong mix of Terry Harrison's "country olive" and "Daniel Smith's "undersea green".

I added more structure to the coral and painted the seaweed using the wonderful "undersea green" color from Daniel Smith ! Just perfect for underwater landscapes !!! :)

Jewel of the Sea walkthrough -idea and sketch

Hello everyone !! 

Here's a preview of the new painting I'm working on ! 

I have the idea to paint an underwater creature but I didn't wished to paint a mermaid again. I got the idea to create a maiden of the sea which would be dressed in coral and seashells.

Here's the sketch:

I really wished to create like a dress around her and make her part of the seabed ! :)

The Morrigan

Here we are final painting of "The Morrigan" ! :) 

The background has been created with various washes of indigo, lighter blues and greys and adding salt between the various washes to create some texture. For the raven I didn't want to paint them "plain black" but instead I tried to create a very dark mix of payne's grey, indigo and dark purple.

This painting is a litte bit more "conceptual" but  I thouhgt it represent her magical and shapeshifting aspect well. :)

"The Morrigan" final sketch

All Hollow's Eve is approaching !! This is the final sketch of my coming new painting: "The Morrigan" ! 

I tried something more "conceptual" as I wished to focus on her face and to surround the figure with the Godesse's elements: the full moon and the raven.

The Evening Star

A new painting !!

I really tried to work more on character faces and body proportions and I'm quite happy how her face in profil turned out in this painting. 

I had the idea of representing Venus called "the evening star" and associated to gold which is reputed to be the first and most brillant star to appear in the night sky. 

It's also the first painting where I used more acrylic than watercolor ! 

A more magical look: new banner and colors !

J'ai essayé une nouvelle mise en page en insérant "A door to Elphame" comme bannière. Je trouve qu'il illustre mieux le nom du blog ! L'ambiance principalement dans les violets me convient très bien comme c'est ma couleur préférée et le thème de  l'arrière plan m'a fait pensé à des paillettes ! On reste dans les rêves et la magie ! :) 

Est ce que cette nouvelle présentation vous plait ? 

I tried a new page setting by adding "A door to Elphame" as the new banner ! I found that it illustrates the name of the blog quite  well and I used various purples as it's my favorite color. The background design made me think about sparkles another element of  the realms of magic and dreams ! :)

"A door to Elphame" finished painting

J'ai pu la finir dimanche ! Je suis vraiment contente du résultat surtout pour le halo autours de la reine des fées ! Il est resté lumineux !! :) 

I managed to finish it on sunday ! I'm really happy how the queen of the fairies turned out and especially that the glow aroud her wings stayed luminous :)

Je pensais essayer de la mettre comme bannière je trouve que le côté coloré de l'arc -en -ciel et l'ambiance féerique iraient bien avec le nom "couleurs de rêves". Qu'en pensez vous ?

I hope you like this new painting ! I thought about choosing it as a new banner for this blog as I find that both the magical feeling and the rainbow colors of this piece match the blog's name "color of dreams". Do you think it would be nice as a new banner ?

"A door to Elphame" painting process

Quelques images de la mise en couleur .. !  A few scans of the painting process ! 

 Voici un premier scan vous présentant les couleurs du fond ! J'avais envie de créer un fond assez féerique qui fasse ressortir l'arc -en -ciel !

Here's a scan of the background colors ! I really wished to create a fairy-like background with colors that may help the delicate rainbow to pop out !

Le fond fini à quelques retouches près !! J'espère que l'aspect enchanté ressort bien !! J'avais envie de rajouter des papillons et des lucioles pour vraiment donner l'impression qu'on est à la porte du Royaume des fées ! vous aimez ?? n'hésitez pas à me laisser vos impressions !

Now the backgrond is almost done !! I really hope that it convey the enchanting aspect I had in mind ! I added butterflies and fireflies to give the impression that we are entering the fairy realm !  Do you like it ? please feel free to leave me your impressions !!

"A door to Elphame" idea and sketch

Voici le croquis de mon nouveau dessin : "A door to Elphame"!

Dans le folklore Écossais Elphame désigne le royaume de féerie et la demeure de la reine des fées. La légende prétends qu'elle passe la porte vers le royaume de féerie assise sur un destrier blanc .. J'avais envie de la représenter sur une licorne je trouve que ça rajoute à l'aspect féerique ! Par contre c'est mon premier dessin de licorne en mouvement soyez indulgents !!! :)

L'arche sera un arc-en ciel qui est selon la légende une des portes vers le royaume de féerie ..

Que pensez vous de l'idée et du croquis ??

Here is the sketch of my new coming painting: "A door to Elphame" ! 

Elphame is the name used in Scottish folklore for the fairy realm, the home of the fairy Queen. 

The legend says she enters the door to the fairy kingdom on a white steed but I found a unicorn might looks more fairy-like ! It's my first drawing of a moving unicorn so please be indulgent !!!! :) 

The arch will represent a rainbow which is reputed to be one of the doors to the fairy realm .. 

What do you think about the idea and the sketch ??

Painting mediums: glittering and sparkling effects

 J'utilise les mediums suivant pour créer des effets étoilés, des effets scintillants et pailletés:

To create stars, sparkles or glittering effects I use the following mediums: 

J'utilise un médium d'aqurelle irisé pour ajouter un effet scintillant sur les ailes d'une fée ou les écailles d'une sirène.. c'est un produit qui peut se mélanger à la peinture ou s'utiliser en petites touches pures. ( c'est comme un vernis mais irisé !).

Pour ajouter de la structure ( comme les étoiles du fond d'Arianrhod) j'utilise un gel pailleté de déco qui peut s'utiliser sur papier, bois, verre ou métal et des stylos encres argentés et dorés.

I use a watercolor iridescent medium to add glitters and sparkles on a fairy wings or on a mermaid's tail.. You can use this medium mixed with watercolor or without diluting it in tiny touches. ( it's like a sparkling varnish !)

To add some structure ( as for example to create some stars on Arianrhod's background) I use a decorating glittery gel that can be used on paper, woods, glass or metal.

-Winsor&Newton Watercolour iridescent medium

-Pébéo glitter touch deco argent/silver

-Uni-ball Signo broad pigment ink UM-153 gold

-Pilot G-1 Silver

Comme j'aime beaucoup expérimenter avec différents médiums voici une série de posts sur certains médiums que j'utilise pour créer des effets pailletés, étoilés, magiques ! 

I paint mostly using watercolor but I love to experiment with various mediums to create sparkly, glittering and magical effects ! Here is a serie of  posts about the various mediums I use !

            

        Les encres  / Inks 

J'utilise plusieurs sortes d'encres. 

Des encres de calligraphie et de dessin qui peuvent s'utiliser pures ou se diluer à l'eau. Je les utilise souvent pour des lavis ou avec une plume ou un pinceau pour les détails. 

Pour créer des bijoux ou des effets plus "magiques" j'ai quelques flacons d'encres acrylique irisées.

I use various types of inks. I dilute callygraphy and drawing inks to create very light or very dark washes or I use them without diluting them to paint details with a brush or a quill. 

To add jewellery or "magical" effects on my characters I use iridescent acrylic inks.

J'utilise les encres suivantes/ I use the following inks: 

-Winsor&Newton Drawing inks 

-Pébéo Colorex

-Abraxas Artist Line

-Daler&Rowney FW Acrylic Artists Ink 

-Daler&Rowney FW Pearlescent Liquid Acrylic

Arianrhod painting process

Je n'ai pas pu faire beaucoup de scans du processus de mise en couleurs car j'ai du travailler assez vite en mouillé sur mouillé pour le fond. 

I wasn't able to make a lot of scans during the painting process of the starlit sky as I mostly worked wet on wet.

Voici le fond presque terminé. Le bleu nuit est un mélange d'encre "argent nuit" et de plusieurs mélanges de lavis d'aquarelle indigo et violet windsor. J'ai ensuite appliqué un gel structurant et du medium irisé pour les étoiles.
Pendant le séchage du fond j'ai commencé à poser les ombres sur la peau d'Arianrhod.

This is a scan of the almost finished background. I created the sky using various washes of "silver night" ink, indigo and windsor violet watercolor. After it dried I applied a structuring gel and an iridescent medium for the stars. 

I also started to apply the shadows on Arianrhod's skin.

J'ai ajouté des mélanges de rose doré et de jaune d'ocre pour la couleur de sa peau et utilisé des mélanges de gouache blanche et argent et d'aquarelle teinte neutre pour ses cheveux. J'ai utilisé de l'acrylique blanche pour les rehauts.

The finished painting ! 

I added washes of rose doré and yellow ocre for her skin and various  mixes of white and silver gouache and neutral tint watercolor for her hair. I used white acrylic for highlights.

J'essayerais de faire plus de scans des prochaines peintures ! j'espère que vous avez aimé ces quelques lignes sur ma façon de peindre !

Arianrhod Sketch

Voici  le croquis de ma prochaine peinture ! 

Il s'agit de la déesse galloise Arianrhod qui est la déesse de la lune et des étoiles, mais aussi du temps. Son nom signifie " roue d'argent" et elle est associée à l'aspect  "pleine lune" de la triple déesse chez les celtes.

Le sablier et les horloges dans le coin gauche représentent le temps et les phases de la lune.  Le symbole celte dans la pleine lune est mon interpretation de la roue d'argent d'Arianrhod.

J'espère que vous aimez l'idée et ce premier croquis !

J'essayerais de scanner quelques étapes de la mise en couleur !

This is the sketch of my future painting ! 

It is my interpretation of the Welsh goddess Arianrhod, goddess of the moon, the stars and of time. 

Her name means " silver wheel" and she is the mother and full moon aspect of the celtic triple goddess. 

The hourglass and the clocks on the left hand corner represent the time and the phases of the moon. The celtic pattern inside the full moon is my representation of Arianrhod's silver wheel.
